I drew this design quite some time ago. It wasn't originally intended for embroidery but ever since I thought it would make a great canvaswork piece. It feels good to be working on a large project again! Especially as it involves both my love for illustration and needlework.
I learned needlepoint (the US term for canvaswork) while I was studying at the Royal School of Needlework. Like most people my age, I was not particularly interested in needlepoint. But once I got started, I fell in love. As a technique, needlepoint has it's own set of artistic challenges. It involves creating an entire scene without letting the background canvas "peak" through, choosing appropriate stitches for each shape, and seamlessly blending colors and blocks of counted stitches.
I'll be keeping you updated as I progress. This piece will take me a good while. For now, you can see a bit of my design process. The original design was drawn in grayscale. I created about six different color variations in Adobe Illustrator. The two below were my favorites. I've decided to go with the sunrise version. What do you think? Which one do you like best?
