Chain Stitch is a versatile and attractive outline stitch. Use it to outline a shape when you want to create a prominent silhouette. Chain Stitch also lends itself well to organic areas, like trees or plants because of the soft and round nature of each stitch.
Chain Stitch can also be used as a filling stitch. Simply work rows of stitching next to each other, in any shape. You can find lovely examples of this technique in early American crewelwork.
I used a very tiny chain stitch in this piece.
