Tambour Beading

tambour beading haute couture

I wanted to share a few photos from our trip to Kentucky. My sisters and I learned to tambour bead from Bob Haven, and boy is he an excellent teacher! Tambour Beading is used in haute couture. It's the fastest and most efficient way to hand bead a garment. It involves a hook (almost like a tiny crochet hook), chain stitches, and any glitzy bead you can string onto thread. I love the possibilities it opens up for doll making and illustration.

But what does it have to do with embroidery? See the leaf in the picture above? It looks silk shaded but was created with the tambour chain stitch. Traditional long and short stitch is smoother and a lot more delicate than the tambour chain stitch, but the tambour chain stitch is about three times faster!

I can't finish this post without mentioning the absolutely wonderful people we met at the workshop. Our fellow students were not only incredibly talented but also so sweet. Thanks girls for making our time so much fun!
